Lot 1022 FEDERAL ERA FIGURE 8 CUTLASS.
Overall length: 33 1/2". Blade length: 28". This style of cutlass likely dates between 1800 & 1840 & is generally thought to be a commercial cutlass used on trading vessels & the like. The plain blade has 3 narrow fullers extending about 12" from the hilt. The sword blade swells near the tip in a rakish fashion. Iron hilt with figure 8 guard & knuckle bow. There is a lanyard slot where the knuckle bow becomes the pommel. The iron grip is vertically reeded. No scabbard. CONDITION: cutlass is quite solid but has a heavily oxidized finish throughout.
